I think that predicting how books might be licensed is very much what the paper is asking for. But I would not say that all your research must therefore be in software licensing.
Research things like to what use are you allowed to put a book which you have puchased (fair use) and how is that different than what you may do with a theoretical book that you have licensed.
And I'm not Jordan so I don't know for sure, but I don't see a reason why you could not research internet books, if you are using books as your focus for the paper. They are a new kind of book; they are still "books." Unless you don't want to consider them for some reason, that's what I think I would research if I were doing that.
Sounds to me (with full awareness that I'm just a student in the class) that you've figured out the right direction already.
