Exactly. Which is why I followed up
Street Performer Protocol (called it Payvoting).

Short version: trusted intermediary (e.g., PriceWaterhouse)
represents general public, which buys release of software
from vendor in one shot for big aggregate sum.
Vendor paid, software totally free, uncopyrighted,
unlicenced, undongled, etc. etc. Total win-win.
Just need a server to record all the votes (and
their credit card numbers). Great for shareware
and open source. Small vendors can be grouped
together to make selling worth the while.
