I have my cookies off (even though it really shouldn't affect an applet) I have my "cookies" directory read only, and I made my files (cookie files IN the dir) System files (so nothing can access them).. IE DOES have the abilities for Java Scripting, it can do ActiveX Scripting, It also does applets and all that neat stuff. Let's see.. I can do IFrame stuff.. I think I used IE 3.02 or something like that at first (for AOL) , THEN since I thought maybe it was a crappy AOL problem, I tried using the NEWER version of IE (4.02 I think) and I still had the problem. Like I said, it doesn't look like an error is occuring it just doesn't seem to be moving, maybe it IS an applet problem. I'll try again right quick and see if anything works. (I'll tell you in this mail) Ok.. I log in as a name that I had it register, I enter my password, and it brings me to the page with the applet. I see a small blue line on the left side of the black box, and a brownish small line (pointing up and down, as well as the blue one) on the right side of the black box. They are both about an inch away from the ends. After I see those lines (this is after pressing start and clicking on the black box in the applet) I see no movement. I don't see anything change. >From what I know about applets, they ARE supposed to be pretty fast and interactive right? (Maybe I'm just too impashient (*sp) ) Well.. I'm not sure if that's going to help at all heh.. When is the last time you have found someone playing? (To make sure it is my side, not your applet) Well.. Thanx alot for being so attentive. heh . Anyways, I'm writing for 2 reasons: first of all, not that there's anything that you can do about it, but I wanted to point out that computer speed/ modem speed influences the game difficulty and also the minimum corners you can turn, considerably. Also, if it's possible I would like to ask that you do something about the "human high scores" page: it's over 100 Kilobytes, which even on a 233 Mhz computer with 32 Megs of RAM and connected via ethernet to the Columbia network, which in turn is connected to the real world by either T1 or T2, is pretty darn slow. Now pretend you're using a 28.8 modem with line noise. :) Anyways, thanks for putting this up and letting bored college kids like me play with it. The biggest fault I see is its insistence on setting up points in its home table, even when playing a running game. If both the player and HC are bearing off, and HC has an open point or a blot in its home table, it will make the point or cover the blot rather than bearing off. Another fault is that HC will usually hit a player's blot even when the risk for HC is very high and it is not very harmful to the player. Also, HC will create blots quite freely in its home table in the (cyber-) hope of later setting up a point there -- high risk play in a situation where a good player would be more conservative. In this same respect, I don't think I'll ever see HC set up a prime, except completely within its home table. Fortunately, for the most part it plays a decent game. Thanks for reading my comments. First thought were a Java-program, but I estimate noone ever developed a satisfying program yet, AND it'll probably be FAR overloaded if 400 people connect at the same time. There may also be problems with access to Java at the schools. Next thought were a server like FIBS with telnetconnection. This could be done but has the drawback of bad graphics....most of these players wont download a client to play with and get very confused with x's and o's. 10 minutes ago I discovered (and beat :-) HC-Gammon.... Would it be possible to get the sourcecode for the script making the layout, rolling dice etc. Would it be possible to change it into 2 players playing each other, instead of a computerplayer, and how heavy is the game on bandwidth ? I should mention that I will probably be able to borrow a big server and the Internetconnection from a tele-company with sufficient bandwidth... Maybe even a mirror of HC-Gammon could be interesting... Let me know if youre able to help me with this project at all !! I just got my friend Lea (username lea) to play a couple of games, but she couldn't get the hang of it and got frustrated. I think you should make sure that the new users get robots from the stupider end of the spectrum more often so that they get hooked early. :) Anyways, .. thanks for the feedback. Oh, yeah. One more thing that I thought of that I don't really know what the right thing to do about is. At least for me (and I assume for the majority of the free world) it is _much_ harder to play against a robot that wraps around the edges of the screen frequently, because it is easy to lose track of where the dead ends are. Therefore, my guess is that the robots that wrap a lot will win, which is not necessarily indicative of a better strategy but only of a better strategy against us humans. Perhaps you could make the java game keep the person's snake in the center and have the universe "revolve" around him? (i.e. shift every pixel, every turn.) don't mind me, just trying to wreak as much havoc as possible. When is this project going to be finished, anyway? I am glad to see that you have the exact dates to see when the extra abandoned games were entered. But, to be very honest with you, I am pretty sure I did not play these games at all. I think this has to do with my earlier problem where I couldn't start games after a previous game was finished. It seemed to have happened around the same time. I would guess that you don't get any other players emailing you with the same problems but I think the system may be interpreting games that can't be started as "abandoned". I am still experiencing the same problem so if you get a chance to check it out yourself, that would be great. It will only happen once you finish playing a game. Let me know how it turns out. I reinstalled the program a few times, to no avail. I have plans to rebuild my entire OS, but I'm not sure when I'll get around to do it. I have a few suggestions to make, that would help human players at least: could you make it impossible for a 180 degree turn in one keystroke? If I'm going left, make it impossible for me to go right. I'm asking, because at times I seem to lose control of the program, and if I turn up then right when heading left, sometimes the program skips the up key and I crash instantly, which is a bad thing. My other suggestion would perhaps screw up some results you've trained your bots for: please put a boundary around the screen. This is giving an extra "egde" to the robots. Sometimes, if a player follows the edge of the screen really tightly, the human can't even see the line there, but I'm pretty sure the robot can see it... And one last suggestion: make it possible to plug other robots to the game. I'm not familiar with Java, but since the program is actually running on my computer (the client computer), data throughput isn't a problem... I know little of ai and how to get it into a program, but About this test, well, the sides of the grid are interconnected. Yet it's hard to watch your light cycle go and try to keep an eye at the other sides of the board at the same time, while the AI program *is* able to "see" the other sides, because it's probes can see it. They have no disability at this. Wouldn't this make the whole experiment a bit 'faulty' ? A simple solution would be to show 9 grids all interconnecting, so you'd have FAR less chance of running off the board (because you are quickly entrapped in a box). Note, I don't mean you should enlarge the grid 9 times, i mean you show the same grid 9 times and blend them together (so there are also 9 light cycles moving about per player, all moving in the same direction. But all the walls are of equal distance relative to each of the 9 cycles, because in fact they are the same walls. During my game, the computer wasted several pips moving in its home board when it should have been moving its runner along. 3--The logic for bearing off also should be checked. The computer rolled doubles ones in the bear off with three men on the one point and only took off two men. 4--I must admit I lost the game. However, when I encounter the kind of logic seen in comments #2 and #3, I sometimes question the true "randomness" of the roles of the die. For example, once the bear off began, the computer rolled double 6's, double 4's, never hit a "hole", etc., while I rolled 1-2 twice, hit several holes, and at least in theory) played my men to appropriate points during the bear off. Do the roles come from a true random number generator? My domain is cst.ca and I had an avg of exactly 70% against HC-Gammon as of Sunday night. I usually check the stats to verify how well I am doing against the computer. Today, I see that the avg has dropped to 69.3 and I believe this is due to the fact that approx.14 resigned games have been added to the statistics of which I did not play. And I don't believe anyone else at this domain plays HC-Gammon. Is there another explanation for this? I have been having problems starting new games as I had mentioned to you in an email last week. Maybe this could have been calculated as a game? Let me know. When trying to quickly turn around, I have often accidentally switched the order of keys and died. Your computer program doesn't understand this, so it keeps playing even when no possible dice throws will prevent a loss. That means the human player must quit the game to end the boredom of a certain victory. Your scorekeeper might record this "quit" as a victory when in fact it was a loss that three double-sixes in a row could not have prevented! Your program has also shut down several times when I was way ahead of the computer -- are these incomplete games counted as victories too? I had not played backgammon in about 18 months and was looking for a free program to bring my skills back to an intermediate level. After several losses on my first day, I looked up the best opening moves in an old book, and have won almost all games since then. Do you know of a more advanced backgammon program that would beat an intermediate level player most of the time? I'm in need of a more advanced program that will win against an intermediate player. But it is not an advanced program. I would rate myself as an intermediate player although I had not played in about 18 months. Since I've won four or five games in a row, I'm going to search for a more advanced program. It's not much fun to win every time - especially without the option of using the cube to end games quickly. The program even allowed me to backgammon it in it's desperate effort to get lucky when way behind and very unlikely to win. The only way for me to give the computer a break is to allow it to have a good first move such as a 3-1, 6-1 or 4-2. This requires me to start many games and quit right away until the computer gets that good first move. I'd bet your statistics are also skewed by people quitting the game because they were winning by so much they wanted to end the game quickly, but had no doubling cube. It's not backgammon without a doubling cube -- it's a game that quickly becomes boring when one player gets a huge lead and can't double the other out of the game! The reason being threefold: (1) it doesn't recognize gammons and backgammons, (2) no doubling, and (3) some very foolish moves (like opening up multiple pieces to be hit in highly probable hit situations which gives much to much advantage to the opponent or leaving pieces in the back area when a loss is evident and permitting a backgammon). Since you do not have doubling in your program, the dice should even things out over time if the players are relatively equal in ability. I do not consider myself a particularly great player although I'm probably a little bit better than average so my constantly beating your program tells me it is mathematically weak. How about an upgrade to make it more of a challenge? Doubling changes the stragegy, and prevents low-porbabiliy, come-back 'back' games. Accepting the double that comes well before these endings will cost a player money if the double is accepted. Backgammon with doubling is a complicated stragety game, but without doubling it is much closer to a children's game. The danger is that playing without doubling will cause your program to adopt inferior strategies for the real game with doubling. I would like to be able to just type, and not have to click. 4) If possible, perhaps you could download the graphics for each point only if that point has changed from the last roll. I rolled double 3. When I tried to bear off I kept getting error messages that my move was illegal. Just thought you'd like to know. Your game is ok.
